When was the new 12-digit registration format introduced?
In October 2019, the SSM introduced a new 12-digit registration number format for business entities registered in Malaysia. The new standardized format replaces the previous styles of registration numbers. It utilizes a single registration format for all types of business entities in the country. This means that even the limited liability partnerships and business registration numbers have adopted the same format.
All registered companies, regardless of incorporation date, will now be issued with a new format number. For those registered before the new numbering system being introduced, you may see the new and old numbers displayed side by side, for ease of reference.
Why was this new format introduced?
This is a measure by the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) meant to facilitate “data management and system development”
What does this new format mean?

This unique 12-digit number is issued to each registered business entity. Each registration number is generated in sequence and follows a certain format, explained below:
- The first four digits represent the year the business entity is incorporated,
- The next two digits represent the type of business entity using the following codes
- The last six numbers depict the running number of the business registration sequence
Code | Type of entity |
01 | Local companies |
02 | Foreign companies |
03 | Businesses |
04 | Local LLPs |
05 | Foreign LLPs |
06 | LLPs for Professional Practice |
