The Company Registration Number – what does it mean?

When was the new 12-digit registration format introduced?

In October 2019, the SSM introduced a new 12-digit registration number format for business entities registered in Malaysia. The new standardized format replaces the previous styles of registration numbers. It utilizes a single registration format for all types of business entities in the country.  This means that even the limited liability partnerships and business registration numbers have adopted the same format.

All registered companies, regardless of incorporation date, will now be issued with a new format number. For those registered before the new numbering system being introduced, you may see the new and old numbers displayed side by side, for ease of reference.

Why was this new format introduced?

This is a measure by the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) meant to facilitate “data management and system development”

What does this new format mean?

This unique 12-digit number is issued to each registered business entity. Each registration number is generated in sequence and follows a certain format, explained below:

  • The first four digits represent the year the business entity is incorporated,
  • The next two digits represent the type of business entity using the following codes
  •  The last six numbers depict the running number of the business registration sequence
Code Type of entity
01Local companies
02Foreign companies
04Local LLPs
05Foreign LLPs
06 LLPs for Professional Practice

How long is the transition period?

An announcement placed at the SSM official website states :

Please take note that throughout the transition period, the existing registration number will be displayed along with the new format (Eg: Name: AMS Setia Jaya Sdn. Bhd. Registration No: 201901000005 (1312525-A) for a period that will be announced later.[1]

The SSM has said that the existing registration number could still be used, together with the new number, for some time to be intimated in due course.

When do I need to use my Company registration number?

The registration number is to be used on all official documents, such as official letters to authorities, invoices, signboards or other printed documents. The old registration number is usually put into brackets and displayed next to the new number (where applicable) on all official documents and statutory forms of the Company.

Where can I find my Company registration number?

For newly incorporated business entities, the number can be found on the Superform (Section 14), the Notice of Registration (Section 15), and Certificate of Incorporation (Section 17).

For business entities registered via the previous registration system i.e. before 11 October 2019, the number can be found on SSM’s portal via e-Search, e-info, and MyData services.
